Peter Yarrow & Richie Havens - "The Great Mandala"
In 1970, I was in 9th grade English class--and a visitor came. His name was Bob Jones, and he was a legend in our district for his track and field awards. Banners hung in the gym with his name and records. And Bob had gone to Vietnam--and came back with shrapnel fragments still in his leg. And he needed a cane to walk.
Our teacher played this song that day--and we listened to Bob.
I can't remember what he said, but I know this music says it better than I imagine I could say.
Peter Yarrow, Paul Stuckey, and Mary Travers sang on the original.
Richie Havens was a spokesman for the same efforts. Carly and Lucy Simon sing on a different version along with Richie and Peter.
